Four intensive farming estates working at full capacity have been selected to house further pieces of LIFE-Aquemfree project pilot equipment, meaning that a study of use under real working conditions can be carried out.
The locations were chosen based on the requirement that they should be representative of the agricultural sector in the Region of Murcia and be situated in the four main geographical areas where intensive farming is carried out. These include the areas known as Campo de Cartagena, Valle del Guadelentín, Vega del Segura and the area around Águilas and Mazarrón.
As such, the selected farms include one with fruit-bearing trees in Cieza, a critics farm in Santomera, a third farm cultivating tomatoes in greenhouses located in Águilas and, last of all, a farm growing peppers in greenhouses and vegetables in the Campo de Cartagena area.
Other aspects were also taken into account, including the crop type, geographical distribution, the size of the farm and the type and quantity of pesticides used. They also needed to have staff with the necessary technical skills and be committed to the aim of the project.
